Watch moment stranded bus pulled from sea in Cleethorpes

Humberside Police are investigating the circumstances leading to the rescue of a stranded bus in the sea in Cleethorpes this morning.

As previously reported, video footage from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) shows the single decker red and white bus, which was towed out of the water and back to the roadside by the coastguard team in the early hours of the morning on Friday, May 25.

Photographs on Cleethorpes Coastguard Facebook page showed the bus is from Skegness-based company Red Cabs, but police could not confirm whether or not it had been stolen.

When the RNLI arrived on the scene the bus, with the engine still running, was in about a metre of water.

The bus was towed out of the water and left in the care of Humberside Police and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution crew returned to station at around 4.30am.

Volunteer crew member Phil Playford told the RNLI website: “We get all sorts of calls here at Cleethorpes but I don’t think we’ve ever been to a bus in the water before!”

A spokesperson for Humberside Police said: “Police assisted the Coastguard in recovering a bus which was located on the beach at Cleethorpes overnight.

“Patrolling officers discovered the vehicle and alerted the Coastguard and together took steps to determine whether anyone was on board.

“Nobody was in the vehicle which has now been recovered, and enquiries are underway to establish the circumstances leading to the single decker red and white bus being on the beach.”
