Dixon Street and Boultham Avenue to close for 12 weeks

Drivers in Lincoln will face 12 weeks of road closures and diversions around Dixon Street and Boultham Avenue due to refurbishment of the bridge over the River Witham.

As previously reported, the closures from July 23 are between the Boultham Park Road and High Street junctions.

The only vehicle access beyond these junctions will be for residents and businesses not for through traffic.

The council warned the project could take longer than expected depending on the level of deterioration found.

Closures

The bridge will be closed to traffic for the duration of the project, with diversions via Tritton Road, Ropewalk, St. Mark Street and High Street.

Vehicles will not be able to travel along Dixon Street from Tritton Road to the High Street and vice-versa and will not be able to use Boultham Avenue as an alternative route.

Residents and visitors will need to make sure they are on the correct side of the closures at the River Witham bridges and, if not, use an alternative route around the closed bridges.

Access for pedestrians and cyclists will be available at all times and the path alongside the River Witham will remain open.

Works will include:

  • The replacement of the concrete on the underside of the structure
  • Renewal of the waterproofing on the bridge deck
  • Reconstruction of the carriageway over the bridge and resurfacing of the carriageway between Dixon Way and the High Street
  • An upgrade to the pedestrian crossing next to the bridge

Executive Member for Highways Councillor Richard Davies said: “The bridge is in poor condition and needs a lot of work. By taking action now, we can stop it deteriorating further. If we just leave it, we would eventually need a new bridge, which would be a far more costly and disruptive project.

He added: “We’re expecting congestion and delays at both ends of Dixon Street and on the surrounding routes.

“We’re advising drivers to avoid the area if at all possible, and allow extra time for their journey.

“The right turn from St. Mark Street into High Street is expected to be particularly busy, and drivers heading to South Park and St. Catherine’s should use the East West Link Road and Pelham Bridge as an alternative route.

“Bus routes using Dixon Street will also be affected, and passengers should check with the relevant bus companies for alternatives routes and timetables.”
