Young driver accused of killing pensioner

The family of the 89-year-old described him as ‘one in a million.’

A young Land Rover driver accused of killing an elderly pedestrian in North Hykeham has appeared at Lincoln Crown Court.

Sian Elizabeth Phelps, 24, was charged with causing the death of 89-year-old Donald Sharpe by careless driving on December 19.

Mr Sharpe, commonly known as Don, sustained serious injuries in the incident which happened just before 9am.

After Mr Sharpe died, his family described the charity dance organiser as ‘one in a million.’

Wearing a white top and checked trousers Phelps only spoke to confirm her name, date of birth and nationality as British.

No plea was entered as members of Mr Sharpe’s family watched from the public gallery.

Lincoln Road, in North Hykeham, was closed for several hours after the incident.

Recorder Paul Mann QC adjourned the case until September 27, where Phelps will be asked to enter a plea.

She was granted unconditional bail until her next appearance at Lincoln Crown Court.
