Major £300k Skegness coast plans to go before council leaders

Major plans to refurbish part of the Skegness coastline, including a cash injection of nearly £300,000, are set to go before council leaders.

East Lindsey District Council’s executive committee will be asked to approve the first phase of the Skegness Foreshore Masterplan, which aims to improve the look of the area and boost footfall and trade.

The £298,000 planned works will include new street furniture such as lights, seating, planters, bins and railings.

Documents before the council will state that: “Improving the appearance, connectivity and visibility of areas which are currently underused will enable more people to experience the area and help to boost passing trade for businesses along the Foreshore.

“The investment in public realm is therefore seen as an important opportunity to generate further private sector led development and commercial opportunities by increasing investor confidence and customer interest in the resort.”

The report also points to improvements in safety and restoring a “sense of pride in the area”.

The masterplan was originally produced in 2010, and in March of this year the council contracted out for a “refreshed version”.

The plans also include the pedestrianisation of Tower Esplanade, improving toilet provision, and the building of a “new tall, iconic structure, on the site of the former Festival Pavilion, which it is hoped will draw people to the area and act as a visitor hub.

“The tower structure could also be used to offer new commercial opportunities to host different, innovative and exciting activities that are not currently available in Skegness,” says the report.

It is hoped the plans will align with ELDC’s ambition to create increased choice and extend the season and will attract new private sector investments.

If approved it is hoped pro launch a tender process in January , with plans to go before councillors in February and work to start in April.
