Cricket: Waddington off the mark with away win

Waddington will be looking to build on this victory

Waddington Cricket Club claimed their maiden victory of the 2019 season with a three wicket win away at Gully Cricketers.

Waddington were left to rue their batting performance after opening their season with a 67 run defeat away at Bassingham last time out. However, Waddo got their season back on track with victory on Sunday.

Gully got off to a steady start seeing off the new ball and being only one wicket down at the break. Opening batsman Naren Padhiyar scored an impressive 68 runs for the hosts.

Waddington fought back with a great display of pace bowling from James Wright. He bowled 10 overs with one maiden and four wickets for 38 runs. Captain Phil Dainty impressed with his fielding while Amile Ratnasiri picked up three wickets from his seven overs.

Gully finished on 192 all out leaving Waddington with a decent total to try and beat. It was then Waddington’s turn to bat, but the visitors got off to a shaky start by losing their captain to an early wicket.

After a prolonged rain break play continued and Levi Mobbs and stand-out performer Ratnasiri produced a 112 run partnership.

Waddington’s Sri Lankan star Ratnasiri ended the match on 93 runs not out whilst hitting the winning score to cap off his fantastic display.

Waddington emerged victorious in their match away against Gully Cricketers.

Waddington captain Phil Dainty said: “It was a great performance all around with Amile and Levi’s partnership the key. Gully Cricketers played the game in a fantastic spirit as always and it was a pleasure to play.”
