Man fined £5.5k for cutting protected tree

He felled a protected Beech tree without permission.

A man from Little Steeping was fined £5,550 after he felled a protected Beech tree without permission.

Norman Gellard was summoned to Boston Magistrates’ Court and sentenced for breaching a Tree Preservation Order.

He was fined £500 and ordered to pay a further £5,050 in court costs.

Councillor Sandra Harrison said: “The District Council is pleased with the outcome of this prosecution. The council will take action against anyone who ignores these orders.

“The orders are put in place to protect trees and consent is required before any work is undertaken.

“It sends out a clear message to people that they should consult the District Council before going ahead with works to protected trees.”

The logs from the protected tree were found in an open shed.
