Conservatives elect new party leader for Boston

Boston Borough Councillor Paul Skinner is leader of the Conservative group on the authority.

Councillor Paul Skinner has been elected as the new leader of Boston Borough Council’s Conservative group.

It follows the resignation from position and party by Councillor Aaron Spencer last week.

Councillor Skinner was voted into his position by members at a party meeting last night (Tuesday).

Deputy leader Nigel Welton, who has been acting leader since his predecessor stepped down, said: “I think Paul is an outstanding councillor.

“The depth of experience, knowledge and motivation he will bring to the council will put us in good stead for the future.”

“I’d like to thank Paul for putting himself forward for this honourable post. I will be honoured to serve under him and support him when he goes up for leader next Monday.”

Councillor Paul Skinner was elected to the council in 2015 and currently serves on the cabinet as the regulatory services portfolio holder.

He has previously held responsibilities over portfolios including the town centre and public toilets.

He also sits on both Fishtoft Parish Council and Lincolnshire County Council’s Coastal Division.

Councillor Aaron Spencer stepped down as the leader of Boston Borough Council last week.

Councillor Aaron Spencer stepped down from the council last week blaming a conspiracy to have him removed.

His fellow colleagues however, accused him of being “arbitrary and dictatorial” and have launched a complaint into “serious concerns”.

Councillor Spencer has since gone independent.

It is understood, several independent members have suggested renominating him as leader, with Bostonian Independent Group member Councillor Neil Hastie calling on Facebook groups for residents and councillors to “back Councillor Spencer and progress”.

A special meeting of Boston Borough Council will be held on Monday (February 3) to elect the authority’s new leader.
