New bus link and cycle paths promised for North East Lincolnshire with £460k funding

New bus services and cycle initiatives are set to be approved by North East Lincolnshire council bosses next week as part of a £462,000 investment in sustainable travel.

The authority was successful in applying for funding from the Department for Travel to deliver its Pedal and Stride to Economic Growth project for 2020/21.

A report before cabinet members next week will hear plans to spend £115,000 on a new bus service connecting Grimsby, Hobson Way, Immingham and the Habrough Trans Pennine Express service and encourage people to switch to public transport.

Elsewhere, £49,000 will be spent on a pedal to work project, including working with local community groups to offer free repairs for minor cycle faults to local residents and a series of safety and training events.

Councillor Philip Jackson, North East Lincolnshire Council leader, said: “These are all schemes which will help people to get back into work in and around North East Lincolnshire.

“There have been comments that Habrough is the nearest station to Immingham so I think there’s been a realisation we need to improve connectivity of the various modes of transport in the area.”

The report before councillors says the move will also help reduce the number of single occupancy car journeys which in turn will have a positive impact on local air quality and the impact of climate change.”

As part of the project the council is trying to develop a number of sustainable “legacy schemes” which will be able to continue after the funding ends.

A £230,000 split will be used on a series of travel action plans for residents, schools and workers.

The funding will be matched by the council, which is in its third year of the Pedal and Stride programme.

Other projects include:

  • £15,000 for Pedal for Health projects including “social ride” groups, “learn to ride” projects and family cycling activities
  • £16,000 towards helping deliver additional Bikability training in primary schools
  • £17,000 providing scooter hire to help residents get to work, college or training
  • £20,000 towards staffing for the project
