Tribute to North Lincolnshire “ambassador” who died after testing positive for coronavirus

Tributes have been paid to a councillor described as an “ambassador for North Lincolnshire”, who sadly died after testing positive for coronavirus.

Bottesford Ward Conservative Councillor Derek Longcake died at Scunthorpe General Hospital on Monday.

Council leader and fellow Conservative Rob Waltham said Councillor Longcake was “incredibly well respected by everybody in the community.”

“He worked incredibly hard and was one of life’s volunteers. He volunteered for everything and was a real ambassador for his ward and for North Lincolnshire,” he said.

“I have never met anybody who didn’t leave his presence and didn’t say what a great guy he was.

“He was a father, a grandfather and he just had likability. 

“He spent his life as a painter and decorator and you don’t have a job where you go into people’s homes without being trusted.”

Councillor Longcake had represented his ward since 2015 and sat on the Planning Committee, the Governance Scrutiny Panel and the Children and Education Scrutiny Panel on the authority.

He was also a member of Bottesford Town Council.

He was also the lead member for adults and health.

He had been chairman and captain of Messingham Shortmat Bowls, the Chairman of the Playing Fields Association in Messingham.
