Young voters in Lincoln are being asked to do their bit and get involved with the national #RegAFriend campaign aimed at getting young people to register to vote.

The campaign is run by the Electoral Commission in partnership with the National Union of Students (NUS) and is being supported by City of Lincoln Council.

It asks young people to encourage their friends to register to vote by sharing photos of their ‘voter cross’ and using the hashtag #RegAFriend.

Once they’ve shared their image on Facebook or Twitter, they’re then encouraged to nominate several of their friends to register to vote too.

Steve Swain, the city council’s Principal Democratic Officer, said: “Young people are one of the demographics least likely to be registered to vote, so it’s important that we seek to engage them in any way we can.

“The #RegAFriend campaign gives young people the opportunity to get their voices heard and encourage them and their friends to take an active role in politics.”

The deadline to register to vote in the upcoming local and Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) elections is 18 April, and the deadline to register to vote for the EU referendum is 7 June.

You can register online here.

Local and PCC elections will take place on Thursday, May 5. And the EU referendum will take place on Thursday, June 23.
