Lincoln man arrested by counter terrorism police

A 35-year-old man from Lincoln has been arrested as part of an ongoing anti-terror investigation.

It follows a number of reports of threatening “religious hatred” messages which sought to cause fear and offence in Muslim communities, police said.

The arrest was made in the south of the city by officers from Counter Terrorism Policing North East (CTP NE), supported by Lincolnshire Police, who also raided an office building in the city centre.

He is suspected of offences including conspiracy and soliciting to commit murder, sending a hoax noxious substance and sending malicious and threatening messages.

The investigation, which began in March, is linked to reports of malicious communications received across the UK.

Police at the time said victims has reported receiving threatening letters in West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, Leicestershire and Metropolitan Police force areas.

The arrest made in Lincoln today was based on suspicion of:

  • Sending a hoax noxious substance under section 114(1)(a) and (3) of the Anti-Terrorism, Crime and Security Act 2001
  • Sending letters/communications/articles conveying a threatening message contrary to section 1(1)(a) and (4) Malicious Communications Act 1988
  • Conspiring and soliciting to commit murder contrary to section 4 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861

He has been taken to a police station in West Yorkshire for questioning.

Lincolnshire Police said: “We understand that people may be concerned following this activity.

“However, we would like to reassure communities that this activity is a result of an ongoing, intelligence led investigation and was not in response to an immediate threat.”
