Lincolnite of the week: Shibina Mathews – Lincs Indian Society

‘We want to share our love of Indian culture and heritage wider and wider’

There’s a little piece of India in Lincolnshire.

It’s a melting pot of families from different regions of the country who come together to share and celebrate culture, heritage, arts and community.

Shibina Mathews is the General Secretary of the Lincs Indian Society, founded five years ago.

It is made up of 72 families as well as a growing number of non-registered participants from all backgrounds.

The organisation began as a formal not-for-profit group which arranges an array of colourful and fun events throughout the year.

From its flagship Diwali celebrations, which have grown bigger and better every November, to entertaining variety shows and charity cricket matches, the society has begun to spread its roots through Lincolnshire and open hearts to its traditions.

Shibina spoke to The Lincolnite about how important it is for Indian families to pass on their heritage to their children, while inviting communities from all walks of life to enjoy their country’s foods, music, dance, sports and traditions.

She and executive LIS member Ruchi Aggarwal described in unison the society as ‘family’, and told us they had only positive and inclusive experiences of integration in Lincolnshire.

They extended an invitation to the wider community to join their events and share their love of Indian heritage.

The next Diwali celebration will be held at the Lincolnshire Showground’s EPIC Centre on Saturday, November 17 2018 and will be their biggest party yet.
