Police crack down on drink drivers

Drink driving: Lincolnshire Police are reminding drivers that drink/drug driving is a dangerous practice.

Lincolnshire Police are launching their summer drink and drug campaign to remind drivers that the force will be doing roadside checks at all times of the day.

Throughout the summer police officers will also be testing drivers for the effects of alcohol and drugs using the Field Impairment Test (FIT).

In 2009 17% of people killed on UK roads were involved in a collision with someone drink driving, and nearly 12,000 were injured.

In June 2010 alone 120 people in Lincolnshire failed or refused to take a drugs test and since August 2010 over 17,000 people have been tested and 1,163 people have been prosecuted.

Lincolnshire Police Collision Investigator PC Mark Hamilton points out that even though drinking and driving is “socially unacceptable” it does still happen.

PC Hamilton added that the launch of this campaign is a “continued effort to make people aware of the danger they pose to others and themselves we hope to see further reductions in drink and drug driving occurrences and make the roads of Lincolnshire safer for all”.
