Man arrested as Lincolnshire cop saves the day on his way to work

All in a day’s work

A chief inspector at Lincolnshire Police saved the day on his way to work when he helped arrest a man who had abandoned a suspected stolen van on the A1.

Officers attended a report of a van being driven along the A1 Long Bennington with a missing wheel, which was called into them at around 4.30am on Wednesday, June 17.

Traffic queues built up after officers cordoned off the area. They found the van on the roadside, but the driver had fled the scene.

There was a temporary closure for around 50 minutes from 7.40am.

Off-duty chief inspector Phil Vickers was driving along the A1 on his way to work when he passed the police cordon.

He continued his journey and passed through Colsterworth, where he spotted a man who fitted the description of the suspect.

He contained him on a slip road before a 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle.

The man remains in custody and will be questioned in due course.
