Pool and diving facilities at Yarborough saved for now

Diving boards saved: Plans to revamp Yarborough Leisure Centre are back to the drawing board with managers confirming the swimming facilities will kept “as they are”.

Proposals to redevelop the Yarborough Leisure Centre have been taken back to the drawing board with managers confirming the swimming and diving facilities will be kept “as they are”.

Initial plans put forward by the City of Lincoln Council detailed an expansion of gym space, downsizing the pool and removing the diving facilities.

The proposal was met with opposition from the Lincoln Diving club who set up a petition, claiming the club would be forced to dissolve.

The club is recognised by the Great Britain Diving Federation as the only diving club in Lincolnshire.

Active Nation, who manage the facility, have since conducted discussions with the council on how best to deliver sport and excursive opportunities in a ‘cost effective way’.

As the result of various consultations, the pool facilities will now remain unchanged. However City of Lincoln Council and Active Nation are continuing to pursue a redevelopment for improved facilities.

Stuart Blackbourn, Contract Manager at Active Nation, said: “As part of this process we have had the opportunity to evaluate the different options available for Yarborough Leisure Centre in more detail, as well as taking into consideration the wider consultation with our supporters.

“With this additional information to hand we have taken the decision that any proposed re-development at Yarborough Leisure Centre needs to include the retention of the swimming facilities as they are.

“It has been really encouraging to see the amount of enthusiasm and passion displayed during the recent consultation about the pool facilities.

“We would like to thank everyone who took the time to share their views with us and look forward to working with these individuals and clubs in the future to develop all pool activities to support the sustainability of the centre.”

Lincoln Diving Trustee, Christopher Ray, said: “We are delighted that Active Nation have declared their commitment to the retention of the diving facilities at Yarborough, and to working closely with us to help in its development.

“The real work starts now to continue the revision and growth of our sport in Lincolnshire and a continued effort to keep public awareness focused on just how precious a resource these diving facilities are.
