Voice of Lincoln: Top Gear in the city – terrific or tedious?

Lincoln on TV: After the controversy surrounding Top Gear in Lincoln, will Lincolnites be watching the episode?

On May 12 this year, Lincoln played host to Top Gear presenters, Jeremy Clarkson and James May. The pair had been testing two environmentally friendly electric motors, the Nissan leaf and the Peugeot iOn, when both cars ran out of juice.

It has now been revealed that the episode will be aired on Sunday, July 31 on BBC2. But will Lincolnites be watching?

Eddie Ash, Lincoln, Aviation Art Studio owner and artist

“I don’t watch Top Gear because Clarkson gets on my nerves. I don’t want to see boys run around and wreck lovely cars.

“If they can ever get [electric cars] to work and if they can sustain the power source then it’s a good idea.”

Martyn Rose (24) Lincoln, teacher

“I think Top Gear’s pretty cool. I think a lot of people from Lincoln will tune in. I think it will be good for Lincoln, but it depends what they’ve said.

“[Electric cars] probably won’t be successful around here, but in cities definitely, I can imagine that. I’m sure there’ll be more and more and they’ll have better deals in bigger cities than Lincoln.”

Natasha Smith (22) Lincoln, graduate

“I think electric cars can only be a good thing. I’m all for being green and environmentally friendly. If I had the money I think I would invest.

“On Facebook everyone was talking about it but I missed it. If I’m in, I may watch [the episode]. Jeremy Clarkson is a bit of an idiot. He’s got a high opinion of himself.”

David Joseph (36) Grantham, legal advisor

“Personally I think it’s a great idea to replace petrol cars and diesel cars because it’s far better for the environment. I think we need to reduce our carbon footprint and anything that can help is a good idea.

“I think [Top Gear in Lincoln] is great; it certainly gives Lincoln a little bit of publicity. I’ll watch with keen interest. I think Top Gear’s a great thing as it updates you on modern cars, what to buy and what not to buy. Hopefully electric cars will take over in time.”

Jo Snodgrass (28) Lincoln, secretary at Siemens

“I normally watch [Top Gear] with my other half. I’ll definitely keep an eye out [for the Lincoln episode]. I just think it’s probably really good entertainment and I’m glad they did it.

“If [electric cars] were more inexpensive then I would probably look at them. I drive my other half’s car when I go out at the weekend or to the gym but otherwise I don’t use the car, I use the bus. I’m using the green buses at the moment. If there were some nicer motors out there and they were on par with today’s prices then I’d probably look at a hybrid.”

Scott Stevenson (27) Lincoln

“I think electric cars are pretty useless; I’ll not be getting one. I used to watch Top Gear all the time. I’ll definitely be watching [the Lincoln episode].”
