Hungate closed for a month due to gas mains works

City centre roadworks: Roadworks and diversions on a busy city centre street will be in place through much of August as work is carried out to upgrade the gas mains in Lincoln.

Roadworks and diversions on a busy city centre street will be in place through much of August as work is carried out to upgrade the gas mains in Lincoln.

Hungate will be closed to through traffic from the junction with Spring Hill to the junction with St Martin’s Lane for four weeks from Monday, August 3.

National Grid will be replacing the existing iron gas mains with modern hardwearing plastic pipes that are designed to last for at least 80 years.

Vehicle access will be maintained to Garmston Street and St Martin’s Lane. Access will also be maintained for residents and businesses throughout the works.

A diversion route for through traffic will be in place.

The work forms part of an ongoing programme to renew the gas mains in Lincoln and North Hykeham, with upgrades taking place on Station Road for seven weeks from Monday, July 27.

National Grid Authorising Engineer Paul Martin said: “This essential work will ensure safe and reliable gas supplies to residents and businesses in the centre of Lincoln until the end of the century.

“We appreciate that this is a very busy area, which is why the work has been planned for the school summer holidays to reduce the impact on traffic.

“We will do everything we can to complete the project as quickly as possible and to minimise any inconvenience our work may cause. We greatly appreciate the co-operation and patience of the local community and motorists.”
