A leading campaigner against the overnight closure of Grantham Hospital A&E will stand in the Sleaford and North Hykeham by-election next month.

Nurse Sarah Stock has thrown her hat in the ring for the election on December 8, with the support of the Fighting 4 Grantham Hospital group and the endorsement of the Green Party.

The by-election was triggered by the sudden resignation of Conservative Stephen Phillips.

The A&E campaigner said that she would aim to put rural Lincolnshire back on the map during the election period.

She said: “Rural Lincolnshire has for too long had services pulled away from it, hospitals, emergency services, schools, small businesses. It’s time to get Lincolnshire back on the map and get voices heard.

“I was born in Lincoln Hospital, brought up in Ruskington, went to the High School in Sleaford, trained at Pilgrim Hospital, Boston as a nurse and currently live in Billingborough, near Sleaford, by the way, so I’m a true Lincolnshire Yellow Belly and passionate about our local area.”

Other candidates announced so far include Victoria Ayling (UKIP), Ross Pepper (Liberal Democrats), Caroline Johnson (Conservative), Jim Clarke (Labour), Mark Suffield (Independent) and Peter Hill (Monster Raving Loony Party).
