Onlookers watched in shock as a car ploughed through the central barriers on Broadgate in Lincoln before crashing into the side of Thorngate Bridge.
Eyewitnesses reported that two men fled the scene of the crash just before 9pm on Monday, January 16, leaving the silver VW Golf among the wreckage.
Lincolnshire Police have this morning said a man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of drink driving.
The silver Golf was driven from Waterside North onto Broadgate, crashing through the central reservation.
Significant damage was caused to the concrete wall on the bridge near to the Green Dragon pub.
The road and footpath were closed for a short while as emergency services cleared the scene. It’s understood the footpath is still closed at the time of writing to allow for repairs.
No injuries have been reported.
A man in his 30s was arrested following a breathalyser test.
One driver at the scene, Catherine Smith, said: “It came out of Waterside North, no sign of break lights on, launched over the central barrier and crashed into the bridge.
“Two lads did a runner. If my friend and I were two seconds earlier we’d have been slammed.”
