A young drug dealer who assaulted a police officer after he was caught at Grantham railway station has been sentenced to two-and-a-half-years in a young offenders’ institution.

Sandro Pires Dos Santos, 19, also threw away a lock knife after he was spotted acting suspiciously with another man outside the station.

Lincoln Crown Court heard Dos Santos and his accomplice both assaulted the police officer who suffered a bleeding nose, scratches to his neck and other cuts and bumps.

Both men were detained after trying to run away and Dos Santos was taken in to custody.

A train ticket from London was among his possessions.

Mark Knowles, prosecuting, said after being put in a police cell Dos Santos was spotted hiding under a blanket.

It was discovered Dos Santos had eaten a large number of plastic bags containing drugs and was clearly unwell.

Dos Santos was admitted to Lincoln County Hospital where he spent five days after suffering a heart attack due to the material he had consumed.

Analysis of the packets showed they had contained heroin and cocaine. Messages concerning drugs were also on his phone.

Edna Leonard, mitigating, told the court Dos Santos was dealing drugs under threats from others.

Miss Leonard said: “He was given the phone and drugs and was being watched. Any money would be taken from him.

“This was a decent young man until he became involved with drugs.”

Dos Santos, of no fixed address, admitted possessing drugs with intent, possessing a bladed article and assaulting a police officer on March 30.

Passing sentence Judge Simon Hirst told him: “You were along way from home with another man and you were stopped for a drugs search at Grantham station.”
