A Gainsborough man who struck out while holding a mug leaving his victim needing 18 stitches in his face has been jailed at Lincoln Crown Court.

Benjamin Chadwick had been asked to leave the house he was visiting after he had “overstayed his welcome”.

He then became involved in a fight with Bart Karpinski who lived at the property in The Drove, Gainsborough.

Martin Hurst, prosecuting, told the court: “The defendant was holding a mug and struck out with a fairly hard blow to the head.

“The mug broke and caused grave injuries.”

“It seems that the first blow must have caused the injuries.

“The fight continued on with them both ending up outside and Mr Karpinski on top of Chadwick but ultimately Chadwick left.

“An ambulance and police were called. Mr Karpinski was taken to hospital. He had 18 stitches inserted in his face.”

Mr Hurst said that as a result of the incident the victim has with scarring to his face.

Chadwick, 23, of Burns Street, Gainsborough, admitted a charge of unlawful wounding as a result of the incident on November 14, 2016.

David Eager, in mitigation, urged that the jail sentence should be suspended.

Mr Eager said: “It was a single blow. He is a young man with no relevant previous convictions. It was an isolated incident.

“He is 23 but quite clearly immature. He left work at 16 and he has never done a day’s work in his life.

“He would normally be at home smoking cannabis.”

Judge Simon Hirst jailed Chadwick for 12 months. He told Chadwick “The result of this is that your victim has horrendous scars to his face.

“I’m afraid that given the extent of the injuries and your response to all of this I do not feel able to suspend the sentence.”
