Plans for new poultry unit housing 400k birds criticised by residents and MP

Concerned residents have voiced their objections to plans for a new poultry unit near Market Rasen – the sixth of its kind in the area.

Plans submitted by ESCO NRG Ltd would see the new rearing unit built on land off Bishops Bridge Road, Glentham, just 300 yards from homes.

If the plans are approved, 10 new poultry buildings housing 400,000 birds would be constructed.

Acorus Rural Property Services, on behalf of the developer, said: “The new buildings will have a uniform appearance and the use of sympathetic colours for the roofing materials and external wall cladding materials will help to reduce visibility by preventing the creation of a strong contrast with the surrounding area.

“The site of the proposed development is not a sensitive location which limits the significance of the visual effect on the landscape.

“The development will also not result in the loss of any of the characteristic landscape
features, or detract from the agricultural landscape character.”

Concerns from residents

Local residents have said they are ‘alarmed’ by the potential negative effects of the plans, commenting in objections about the drainage and surface water runoff into the River Ancholme.

Some of the main reasons for the objections include:

• Odour
• Access to the site
• Lorries travelling at night
• Drainage
• Noise pollution
• Air pollution

In objection to the plans, Ruth Anyan said: “I consider that the proposal would adversely affect the overall character of the landscape, which no amount of mitigation would overcome.

“My home is very close to the proposed development, and I believe that the odours created will significantly impact my property and directly impact on my health and wellbeing, particularly during hot weather or when it is windy as the wind direction is typically westerly.”

Sheila Taylor added: “This sounds horrendous.

“400,000 chicks! Think of the noise, the smell, the traffic, and in such a small location.”

Gainsborough MP Sir Edward Leigh has also objected to the plans, suggesting that the plans involve a dangerous stretch of the A631.

He said: “Having spoken to local residents, as well as their local councillors, I am very concerned over the serious objections which have been raised by local residents about the proposed development.

“Notwithstanding the potential for contamination of the Ancholme, the location involves a dangerous stretch of the A631.

“I am aware that a recent parish council meeting attracted a strong attendance concerned with and objecting to the proposal.

“I am calling on the local planning authority to refuse permission in the interests of the local community and environment.”

West Lindsey District Council will decide on the plans at a later date.
