“Clean my bench!”: Screamed man who kicked street cleaner, 70

He demanded that the council worker cleaned ‘his bench’ before kicking him.

A 70-year-old part-time street cleaner was kicked in Boston by a man who ordered him to “clean my bench!”

The cleaner, who retired from Boston Borough Council after a life long career, but helps out on occasion, had already cleaned the stretch along the Crown House footpath near B&M on Monday, July 23 when he was confronted.

The council said, after a break, he returned to a tall man who told him, “clean my bench”.

He said he told him that the area had been cleaned and that it would be cleaned again later that day, but not immediately.

The man is said to have repeatedly insisted “clean my bench now” before approaching him from behind as he walked away and kicking him in the leg.

He was left shocked and bruised.

Police have been informed of the assault. Anyone with information should contact the council’s community safety team on 01205 314200 or the police on 101.

Councillor Paul Skinner, the council’s portfolio holder for community safety, said: “This is an appalling incident, an unprovoked attack on a council worker diligently going about his business.

“The police are investigating and we will be providing them all co-operation to support their enquiries and ensure that the person responsible for this assault feels the full weight of the law.”
