Further improvements for Cleethorpes regeneration

Further improvements as part of the £7.2 million Cleethorpes regeneration scheme are expected to be given the go ahead.

The final proposals to create a public plaza, on street parking and pedestrian crossings on Seaview Street in the town will go before senior North East Lincolnshire councillors next week.

It comes as the first phase of the regeneration plans were given the green light back in July and members of the council’s cabinet have been recommended to approve the further plans.

The authority revealed proposals to carry out the scheme in an effort to improve the street scene in Cleethorpes back in March.

The public realm works to the Alexandra Road and High Street area of the town are expected to start in September and be finished by July 2019.

Now, the final plans for Seaview Street will be included in the first phase of the scheme.

The proposals include:

  • Creating a public plaza area
  • Improving the pedestrian crossings on the street
  • On street parking
  • Pedestrianising Wardall Street with link to the car park
  • Creating a loading bay for businesses

Councillor Matthew Patrick, cabinet member for environment, previously said that the proposals would be a “win win” for the town as it would bring in more business rates and create jobs.

Meanwhile, the town’s MP, Martin Vickers, said that the project was just the “first step” in bringing more jobs and investment to the area.

The council secured £3.3 million from the Coastal Communities Fund to regenerate the promenade, town centre streets and introducing public art.

A further £500,000 has been secured to create a cycle hub at the town’s train station.

Meanwhile, £1.9 million has been awarded to the project by the Heritage Lottery Fund and £1 million will be spent by the council on a cultural heritage  programme.
