New £1.4m Lincolnshire Co-op food store open for business

It has created 15 full and part-time roles

Local representatives and councillors, MP for Scunthorpe Nic Dakin and more guests joined Lincolnshire Co-op colleagues including President Steve Hughes and Chief Executive Ursula Lidbetter to celebrate the opening of the new Scawby Food Store.

A new £1.4 million Lincolnshire Co-op food store opened in North Lincolnshire just in time for Easter.

The outlet on West Street in Scawby opened on Thursday, April 18. It has created 15 full and part-time roles for the area.

The new store offers a wide range of chilled, fresh and frozen goods. This includes the Society’s Love Local range featuring meat from Uncle Henry’s Farm in Grayingham and curry pastes from Scunthorpe-based Mr Huda’s.

The new Lincolnshire Co-op food store in Scawby is now open.

A new Co2 heat-reclamation fridge system has been installed at the store. It recycles heat produce by the refrigeration process back into the store that would usually be wasted.

It uses carbon dioxide which has a lower global-warming impact than traditional chemical gases used in the process. It is the first of its kind to be added in a Lincolnshire Co-op outlet.

There is also a 32-space car park and a number of facilities for community use outside the store including a bench, bird table and two wooden raised beds which will be planted with herbs.

Three local causes each received £500 as part of the official opening ceremony celebrations on Thursday – primary school Scawby Academy, Scawby Village Hall and Demeter House school for children with emotional, behavioural and associated learning difficulties.

The store’s Community Champions fundraising for the Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance was also kick-started with £100.

Scawby Food Store Manager Chris Wray said: “The team were waiting and watching while the store was being built and we’re delighted to open the doors and welcome everyone in. We hope lots of people pop in to say hello and take a look around.

“We’re also pleased to be looking after the environment, both with our innovative heat-reclamation system and the wildlife-friendly planting outside the store.”
