Banned driver jumped out of moving car in Grantham police chase

He has now been sentenced

A disqualified motorist who drove off from police in Grantham after officers tried to “box him in” was jailed for 12 months on Tuesday.

Jabari Weekes, 25, was pulled over at around 5.30pm on May 22 after police noticed his vehicle being driven suspiciously.

Rosemary Kavanagh, prosecuting, said Weekes initially stopped but was then seen moving his hand towards the gear stick.

At the time officers had tried to box his Vauxhall Astra in with two police cars at the rear and a third police vehicle at the front, alongside a member of the public’s car.

Miss Kavanagh told the court Weekes then mounted the pavement and crossed over the path towards Barrowby Gate.

The court heard a police pursuit could not be authorised because it was a busy time of day and in a residential area.

Weekes again came to the attention of police in the Stevenage area on June 25 when he was driving a Vauxhall Vectra car with a missing wing mirror and false number plates.

Miss Kavanagh said Weekes failed to stop and reached speeds of up to 85mph in a 40mph zone before cutting across another motorist at a roundabout.

The court heard Weekes eventually jumped from the car as it was still moving, causing it to crash into a stationary car and a garage, which caused significant damage.

He again ran off and was finally arrested in Grantham in October.

Andel Singh, mitigating, said Weekes had not been jailed before and was now living with his family.

Passing sentence, Judge John Pini QC told Weekes: “In my view you have run out of chances.”

The judge added: “On May 22 in Grantham you drove off from police officers.”

Weekes, of Convents Square, Greenwich, admitted two charges of driving while disqualified and two charges of dangerous driving. He was also banned from driving for three and half years.
