Coronavirus: Figures reveal Lincolnshire’s vulnerable over-70 population

Government figures have revealed the percentage of the over-70 population in Greater Lincolnshire who are at greater risk of severe illness from coronavirus.

Data from the Office of National Statistics shows that East Lindsey has the highest population percentage of elderly residents with 21.4%.

Lincolnshire has a population of 755,833, while neighbouring North Lincolnshire has 172,005 and North East Lincolnshire 159,821.

It comes as the government asked vulnerable people, which includes some over the age of 70, to stay at home and avoid face to face contact for 12 weeks.

The measure is estimated to have effected around 1.5 million people in the UK.

Now, the most recent percentage data from the ONS has revealed the estimated numbers of people over 70 in Lincolnshire.

It comes as the government has stepped up its measures to prevent COVID-19 from spreading.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson placed the country in lockdown on Monday for three weeks in an effort to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

So far, the UK’s death toll for patients who tested positive for the virus stands at 435.

Yesterday, the amount of confirmed cases of COVID-19 increased by more than 1,400 in a single day to 8,077.

In Greater Lincolnshire, the number of positive cases stands at 36.

28 have been confirmed in Lincolnshire, five in North Lincolnshire and three in North East Lincolnshire.

Meanwhile, hospital bosses said at least nine COVID-19 patients are being treated at Lincoln County Hospital and Boston Pilgrim Hospital.
