Man jailed for causing death of Scunthorpe teenager

A man has been sentenced for causing death by dangerous driving.

A man has been sentenced to five years in prison for causing a crash which lead to the death of Scunthorpe teenager Paige Collier.

Daniel Whitehand, 21, of Avenue Nozay, Broughton, had been driving a silver Peugeot 207 with three passengers in the car when his vehicle left the road at Ermine Street, Winterton, North Lincolnshire in November 2016.

Courts heard he had been driving at “grossly excessive” speeds of between 80 and 90 miles an hour on country roads when he had lost control of the car and hit a tree.

It ended up on its roof on the verge of the road.

Paige Collier, 17, a rear seat passenger in the car, lost her life. Her 17-year-old friend, Jasmine Codling, also suffered life-changing injuries.

Whitehead was sentenced on Monday, April 23 at Grimsby Crown Court after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He was sentenced to five years in prison and was disqualified from driving for another four years after release.

Jeremy Evans, of the Crown Prosecution Service, said “I hope the sentence brings some comfort to Paige’s bereaved family”.

Tributes were paid to Paige following the news of the fatal crash. She was described as a “rock” and a “beautiful and lovely girl”.
