Grit ready: Winning gritter names announced

Hopefully roads boss Grit-chard Davies was pleased with the winning names

Nearly 300 entries were whittled down to just four as Lincolnshire County Council announced the winners of its gritter naming competition.

As previously reported, people were given two weeks to put their ideas forward to name the council’s four biggest gritters towards the end of 2018, before the ones deemed the best were selected.

The winners are:

  • The Spread Arrows
  • Sir Ice-acc Newton
  • The Jolly Gritterman
  • Mar-grit Thatcher

Readers of The Lincolnite and Lincolnshire Reporter came up with their own suggestions here including Gritney Spears, Cliff Gritchard and Gritsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Anti-Slip Machiney. Could you have done better?

Executive Support Councillor for Highways, Councillor Clio Perraton-Williams, said: “We’ve had some great suggestions and it was really difficult to pick just four.

“However, the winning entries were particularly creative and original and all had a distinct Lincolnshire connection.

“We’d like to thank everyone who took part – I think that we’ve been able to come up with four fantastic names for our gritters!”
