Plans tabled to demolish former Scunthorpe Market

It’s the end of an era for the old Scunthorpe Market as plans have been tabled to demolish the site.

North Lincolnshire Council has lodged proposals to determine whether prior approval is needed to flatten the building, which dates back to the 20th century.

According to the plans, the contractor would expect to complete the demolition by March 2020.

The council has yet to announce plans for the future of use of the site.

A decision on the demolition will be made by the authority at a later date.

The old building was closed as the authority looked to relocate the market elsewhere in the town centre.

Traders were moved to the new site, St John’s Market, in March at the former British Home Stores building in the Parishes Shopping centre.

The new market site followed an announcement of a £60 million investment into Scunthorpe Town centre.

As part of the plan, £4 million was invested into converting the former BHS building into a market hall.

Traders initially had mixed reactions to the new home for the market, with some saying they were “unconvinced”.

Council leader, Rob Waltham, said the old building would have been “too costly” to revamp.
