Guillain-Barré Syndrome: A journey of heartbreak and miraculous recovery for Lincoln family

GBS affects around 1 in 100,000 people, but it impacted two people in the same family in 2021

A woman from Lincolnshire has shared her family’s heartbreaking experience with Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a very rare autoimmune disorder that attacks the central nervous system which has claimed the life of her mother, as well as temporarily paralysing her son.

Vee Duffy, 40, knows better than most the impact of Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a mysterious but potentially fatal condition. In 2021 it claimed the life of Ryalla Duffy, a popular person in Lincoln’s travelling community and Vee’s mother — and there were moments she feared it was about to strike her family once again.
