Deadline approaches to register to vote in EU referendum
People wishing to have their say on the upcoming EU referendum have until midnight on Tuesday, June 7 to register to vote. People wishing to have their say on the upcoming EU referendum have until midnight on Tuesday, June 7 to register to vote.
The referendum on June 23 will ask voters whether they want to remain or leave the European Union.
People can vote in the referendum if they are registered to vote in the UK, are 18 or over on June 23 and are:
A British or Irish citizen living in the UK
A Commonwealth citizen living in the UK who has leave to remain in the UK or who does not require leave to remain in the UK
A British citizen living overseas who has been registered to vote in the UK in the last 15 years
An Irish citizen living overseas who was born in Northern Ireland and who has been registered to vote in Northern Ireland in the last 15 years
EU citizens are not eligible to vote in the referendum, unless they met the criteria above.
Anyone who was already registered to vote before the April 18 deadline for the elections taking place across the UK on May 5 will also be registered to vote at the EU referendum and will be able to cast their vote.
However, anyone who has moved address since then will have to re-register.
People applying to vote by post will need to complete a postal vote application form and send it to their local electoral registration office by 5pm on June 8.
Those applying for a proxy vote will need to follow the same process and submit their form by 5pm on June 15.
People applying for a proxy vote will need to state why they cannot vote in person.
Their proxy must be registered to vote and be eligible to vote in the referendum.
