Anniversary Lincoln balloon launch to honour memory of teen crash victims

A one-year anniversary memorial and balloon launch will take place in Lincoln next month to honour the memory of three teenagers who died in a crash near RAF Scampton last year.

As previously reported, Joby John Scrimshaw, Aiden Sawyer and Ricky Sharp died, and three others were injured, after a silver Vauxhall Astra left the road at Welton Cliff at around 8pm on Monday, March 25, 2019.

More than £3,500 was raised for the funerals of the crash victims and a tributes poured in after their deaths.

A big remembrance event took place in City Square in Lincoln to honour their memory later that month.

Tom Washington, who is a family friend of Joby, has started planning this year’s anniversary event, which will take place on Saturday, March 28.

The memorial event, again in City Square, will start at 12.30pm and a balloon release will follow at 1pm.

Tom, who also made a speech at last year’s remembrance event, told The Lincolnite: “I am honoured to be organising the one-year anniversary memorial for the boys.

“A GoFundMe page has also been set up to raise money for Queen’s Medical Centre (where Aiden donated his organs).”

He added that police and security will be in place to keep the event and public safe, with a balloon release to happen annually in memory of the teens.

A case relating to the tragic crash is still ongoing in court with 19-year-old Kasey Boulton due to face a three-day trial at Lincoln Crown Court starting on August 24.

When she appeared in court on January 3, 2020, she pleaded not guilty to three charges of causing death by dangerous driving.

The Vauxhall Astra, which had five passengers, is alleged, to have been travelling at a speed approaching 60mph when it crossed the road before colliding with a tree on the opposite side.
